Wellness Visits

Why does my child need a wellness exam?

Wellness exams are routine health evaluations your child should receive once a year to monitor their growth and development. In addition to tracking your child’s growth, wellness exams give your pediatrician at Pediatric Associates of Plano the opportunity to identify potential health issues in their earliest stages. As many conditions don’t often present symptoms until they progress, annual exams ensure your child is healthy and their body is functioning optimally.

What can I expect during a wellness exam?

Each exam starts with a review of your child’s personal and family health history. Your provider also assesses your child’s existing health and can discuss any new symptoms they have. This is also a great time to talk about any concerns you have regarding your child’s physical, mental, emotional, and behavioral health.

During a physical exam, your pediatrician notes important information about your child, including their:

  • Weight and height
  • Blood pressure
  • Overall skin health
  • Muscle strength and flexibility
  • Heart and lung health
  • Academic concerns
  • Dietary habits
  • Age related risk/injury

The pediatrician also evaluates your child’s vision using the Welch Allyn SureSight® screening and Snellen eye charts. On-site hearing evaluations are also available, including audiometric and otoacoustic hearing screenings.

If your child is undergoing treatment for existing health issues, your pediatrician can review the effectiveness of current treatments and adjust as needed.

Any recommended or required vaccinations will be administered during the wellness exam.

Will my child need blood work?

Blood work may be part of a routine wellness exam if your child has unexplained symptoms or risk factors for certain diseases, such as diabetes and high cholesterol. Most blood work is drawn by our highly skilled pediatric team in our office.
